First Light, who fund and support film projects with young people throughout the UK, and Directors UK, the professional association for film and TV directors, have teamed up to offer this unique 3-day course, for free.

The Directors LAB will offer you the opportunity to learn all about the role and work of the director through all stages of production from development and pre-production, production and post-production to understanding the directors vision, working with crews, DOP’s, actors and editors.  It will also offer practical advice on how to build a career as a director.

Through a series of sessions from guest speakers, exercises, case studies of short films, project work, discussions and practical exercises participants will spend 3 days getting to grips with just what it takes to be a director.

The Directors LAB aims to support aspiring filmmakers in learning the craft of directing.

This opportunity is targeted at self-motivated and self-achieving young filmmakers aged between 16-25 years, applications are especially welcome from those from diverse backgrounds currently under-represented within the film industry.

  • NEETS (not currently in education, employment or training)
  • Ethnic Minority backgrounds
  • Young carers and cared for young people
  • Young Offenders
  • Unemployed or low waged
  • Lone parents
  • Applicant based inYorkshire

DATES:  Friday 31st August – Sunday 2nd September.  Each day will run from9-6pm and you must be available to attend all 3 days.  Lunch will be provided.

LOCATION: The course will take place in Leeds. This course is free of charge to successful applicants. Some discretionary bursaries to assist with travel and childcare may be available.  Successful applicants can request a bursary application form once accepted onto the scheme.

TO APPLY:   Applicants must have made at least 3 short films or similar.  If you would like to apply please post:

  • a one page cv or bio (including filmography)
  • a completed application & diversity monitoring  form (download here)
  • A DVD of one complete film, film extract or similar no longer than 15 minutes that you want to represent your work as part of your application.
  • Photocopy of photo I.D (passport, driving licence or similar)
