Filmmaking Competition – Your Chance to Cut Through the Red Tape: The Millionth Monkey’s Movie is our Biggest Project Yet!

What a fantastic launch night for the Millionth Monkey’s Movie! It was great to see so many people join us and our monkey partners, Close-Up Film and Pinewood Studios Group, on 6th December (is it really two weeks ago?!) at 01zero-one in Soho, for Christmas drinks, pizza and mince pies whilst discovering all about our biggest project to date.  With a live countdown to the launch, everyone got to see a fun video that explains a bit more about why we’re running the competition (and if you haven’t already seen it, take a look here) and we took some great questions from the floor, the answers to which will be appearing in our FAQ section very shortly, so if there’s anything you’d like to know, drop us a line and we’ll include it in our answers.  We were delighted that leading comedian, writer and broadcaster Jon Holmes (Dead Ringers, So Graham Norton, Mock the Week, BBC6 Music and regular guest host to the Chris Evans Show with Miranda Hart) was able to join us.  Jon is a big supporter of the Millionth Monkey, sharing news about it with his listeners and fanbase. On the night, Moira Morrisonreceived one of our limited edition Millionth Monkey t-shirts (thanks to Webra Multimediafor the logo design) for being the first official registrant (we can’t wait to see your pitch, Moira) and the first official entry comes from Nathan Erasmus, of Gravy Media, working with top animator Alex Williams (Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, The Lion King, The Iron Giant) for My Haunted House, about 12-year-old Charlie who shares his home with his family of supernatural monsters.  Take a look at the pitch, plus some storyboard animation, here. So what’s it all about?

Would we get the next Tarantino? How many times have you seen a movie and said, “I could do better than that”? Well here’s your chance to put your money where your mouth is and see how many people want to watch your movie!

With social media challenging the old order, we can listen to the audience and reach out for the best ideas.

Who is it for?

Everyone! If you have an idea – whoever you are, wherever you are – we want to hear it! This is the people’s movie.

Is this also for experienced filmmakers? Yes!

For those with experience, this is a chance to try ‘co-creation’: to work with your fans to develop commercial ideas.

How does it work?

The idea is simple: For a small fee, entrants sign up to theMillionth Monkey’s Movie website, create a profile, pitch their idea, supply supporting information and then gather as many votes as possible.  In a twist on the crowd-funding phenomenon, two thirds of the money raised from entrance fees will go towards the development costs of the new movie. It’s a concept that is already gathering support across the industry:

Andrew Smith, Pinewood Studios: “This is an innovative way to cut through the red tape and let original concepts find their audience. Good luck to the entrants!”

Sean Pertwee, Actor: “The talent is there, bubbling up, in Manchester, Cardiff, London and more. Those who are prepared to be brave and invest now will succeed. It’s time to start doing, and the Millionth Monkey is a good start.

Jon Holmes, Comedian, Writer & Broadcaster: “No more knocking on doors and pitching to the money men. This is where the audience will decide exactly what movie they want to see made. And it could be yours…


The Prize:

The Winner, will get two thirds of the net money received from the entry fees for the competition and the support of D-Media to help the film get made, starting with a tour of the facilities at Pinewood Studios, who are one of our sponsors. Gina Fegan (The Tournament, Devil’s Playground) will also be appointed executive producer of the film to support the project.

The Runner-Up, will get a tour of Pinewood Studios, including an industry lunch, and one day with D-Media and Close-Up to develop a realistic outline of how to take the project further.

The Weekly Winner, will be profiled on the weekly leader board and will win two cinema tickets.
